The Rock

Jacob bends over a great stone pillar, pouring oil from a vessel in an act of consecration. The moment recalls the morning after his dream of the ladder reaching heaven, when he took the stone that had served as his pillow, set it up as a memorial, and anointed it with oil. The rock becomes a visible witness to God’s covenant promise, marking the place Jacob named Bethel, “the house of God.”
