Samuel appears as a luminous spirit within the dark cave of Endor, his aged face and lifted hand emerging in solemn judgment. Before him, King Saul and the medium of Endor recoil with raised hands, confronted by the prophet whom Saul sought after God no longer answered him. The scene draws from 1 Samuel 28, where Saul, in fear of the Philistine army, violates the command against necromancy and asks the medium to call up Samuel. The apparition announces that the kingdom has been torn from Saul and that defeat is near. The image emphasizes the spiritual tragedy of seeking forbidden counsel when repentance and obedience have been abandoned.
